After the turn of the millennium, Nike firmly established its position as the leader in the sportswear industry. However, Adidas has consistently responded to every new initiative from Nike with its own challenges.

In the realm of team basketball shoes, Nike launched the Hyperdunk series, while Adidas countered with the CrazyLight line.

The final chapter of the Hyperdunk series was seen in 2018, with the Nike Hyperdunk 2017 and Adidas Explosive 2017 delivering a competitive, albeit evenly matched, performance.

Following this, both Nike and Adidas started new journeys, with Adidas briefly overshadowing Nike in terms of market presence.

During the 2019 Basketball World Cup, all eyes were on the new team-oriented Alphadunk. However, the poor on-court performance of these shoes, especially their dreadful comfort level, became a notable talking point in the sneaker world.

In preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Nike pulled out all the stops with a full range of products. Their ZoomBB Nxt basketball shoes featured a dual-layer React midsole paired with Zoom Pods for added cushioning, aiming for performance-driven features.

However, despite all the advanced technology, the shoes failed to deliver the expected on-court feel, with poor stability hampering their success in sales. It wasn’t until their prices dramatically dropped that they gained some popularity, primarily being picked up for casual wear.

On the other hand, Adidas unveiled the high-end, no-series N3XTL3V3L, a shoe that, despite being quite picky about foot shape, gained more appeal than the Alphadunk thanks to a unique design and exposure through player Trae Young.

In 2020, the N3XTL3V3L continued as Trae Young’s signature shoe, improving upon earlier designs to offer better support and stability.

As Nike released its GT line, Adidas’ team shoes seemed to fade into obscurity. Adidas did not hold back with their own attempts, though, designing the AdizeroSelect with the Lightstrike midsole for quick responsiveness, but struggled to clearly define its target audience, leaving many buyers confused about its intended purpose.

This confusion, paired with a lack of clear positioning, resulted in the shoe being heavily discounted in secondary markets.

Adidas found its footing with the AdizeroSelect 2.0, refining its focus to create a lightweight, responsive shoe that combined Lightstrike technology with better foot wrapping.

The shoe gained better attention, especially after it attracted the right endorsement from Jalen Green, and an exclusive colorway designed for Hu Mingxuan increased its sales substantially. Green’s All-Star level performances in the 2025 season helped boost the shoe's visibility.

Now, the Adidas AdizeroSelect 3.0 has already made waves in the basketball world, first seen on court with Jalen Green wearing them. The streamlined design and Lightstrike midsole continue to serve the shoe’s responsiveness, and it also features Green’s personal logo on the heel.

As performance continues to improve with each new iteration, it’s clear that the AdizeroSelect 3.0 could be the next major step for Jalen Green’s signature shoe line.

With Nike’s GT line coming to a close, the question remains: who will Adidas choose to represent their next wave of basketball footwear?
